Hardy pond plants are classified as water plants that will survive the winter up to zone 4. Hardy plants will come back every year and are preferred over tropical plants due to this reason. In general tropical pond plants are larger and more colorful than hardy pond plants.

There are many benefits to having plants in your pond. Pond plants reduce algae by using up nutrients that algae needs in order to grow. There are many varieties of pond plants, the most common are floating plants and water lilies. Floating pond plants provide great coverage which is a good thing if you want to reduce algae and protect your fish from predators. Certain floating plants like Water Hyacinth are illegal to sell in some states due to their invasive nature.
